Medigap.com’s “Medicare Basics” Survey Results

Medigap.com recently polled over 750 Medicare beneficiaries, ages 65 and older, to uncover their attitudes and beliefs toward their Medicare coverage. While the results did show some promising knowledge of and satisfaction with Medicare from beneficiaries, there were several key areas that revealed a need for more information on plan details and a desire for expanded coverage of medical services. We’ve included the full survey results here and below:

  • Respondents were initially asked what forms of Medicare coverage they have:
  • More than one-in-four (26%) respondents said they were only “somewhat familiar” with their plan’s coverage.
  • Nearly one-in-three (31%) respondents felt that their plan does not cover all of their medical essentials.
  • Nearly one-in-five respondents (17%) claimed to be genuinely unsatisfied with their Medicare coverage.
  • Almost one quarter (23%) of respondents claimed to have considered switching to a different Medicare plan.
  • Over half (56%) of respondents said they were concerned about the cost of their medical expenses.
  • Nearly two-in-five (38%) respondents reported having been overwhelmed when trying to understand what is and is not covered by their plans.
  • Nearly one-in-three (27%) respondents affirmed that they have essential medical needs that are not covered by their plans.
  • More than one-in-ten (12%) went so far to say they have previously not sought out certain medical services because they were unsure if their plans covered them.
  • When asked what medical services they wished their plans had better coverage of, the respondents reported the following:
    • Dental Health Services: 74%
    • Vision Health Services: 52%
    • Hearing Health Services: 43%
    • Home Care Services: 24%
    • Mental Health Services: 14%
    • Other: 12%

As more Americans age into Medicare, and the Medicare program continues to change in regard to pricing and coverage, it’s important for all beneficiaries and their caregivers to have a thorough understanding of their current plan and the alternative plans available. Medigap.com remains a free resource with up-to-date information on any changes to coverage and associated costs to help Medicare beneficiaries choose the plan/s that best fits their budget and healthcare needs.
